8 years and never changed? I'd drop the pan, change the fluid and
filter and have the bands adjusted for starters and see what happens.
Thats some pretty old fluid in there.

Dropping the pan won't get nearly all the fluid out. Could have a flush
done after changing the filter to get 100% of the fluid replaced. I've
heard doing so on a never serviced tranny could cause some seals to
leak. NOt had that happen to me.
