| 240d blowby | Hi, I bought an 82 240 d with 180k. It was kinda weak when I got is so I had to do some things before I felt I could evaluate it. A fuel filter change by the p/o prior to purchase masked a rusty fuel tank and within 100 miles the filters were clogged. Replace the tank. One of the first things I had done was a compression check. No 1 was 310 and the others within 5 pounds of 350. That was before I adjusted the valves 5 of which were very tight but I haven't redone the compression yet. When I fixed the throttle I saw a heavy buildup of sludge in the intake and noticed the vacuum tube to the egr was disconnected. Changed filters and oil. It has some small leaks, nothing major that I can tell. W The inside of the engine looked pretty clean when I replaced the oil pan gasket. Flushed the rusty collant with citric acid. Everything seemed ok around town except for my seeing smoke on acceleration in the headlights of cars behind me. Too hard to evaluate color and density...seemed to be grayish...some black soot in the tail pipe. Did some injector cleaning drills. Got a Blackstone report; Aluminum 6 avg is 3, Chromium 2 avg is 1, Iron 73 avg is 21, Copper 3 avg is 2, Lead 2 avg is 6, Tin 0 avg is 1 The report said not to worry yet. I'd finally gotten it to the point that it had enough power to take a 400 mile round trip. It did up to 85 floored. I think I've got under 1k on the oil change and I'm down nearly 3 quarts of oil. That's when I learned how to check blowby on YouTube. YouTube - Mercedes Turbo Diesel Blow-by test that one where the cap doesn't seem to matter whether it's on or off isn't what I saw. YouTube - Re: Mercedes Turbo Diesel Blow-by test smoking a little less is more like mine. The only non negative thing was that it took about 8 seconds to die when I plugged the breather. Compounded with the blowby and oil burning(?) seeing all the rust in the tank and filters has me worried. I'm wondering if it accelerated cylinder wear, nevermind what it might have done to the injector pump. What should I do at this point? Thanks bb | | |
