Default Check engine light on again - 1998 A4 V6

I have a 98 A4 Quattro with the 2.8V6. For the third time in 3
months, the check engine light has come on. The first time it was
fixed, the mechanic said it was an oxygen sensor - which is what
I thought that always meant. 3 weeks later, it came on again and
the mechanic said it was a tube related to the oxygen sensor.

It just came on again. I need to have some relatively major work
done to the car in the next 6-8 weeks that I want to schedule
around the holidays so I won't be without a car for work for too
long. Can I just drive with the light on for a few weeks or will
it damage the car? I drive about 200 miles a week.

ross-tech.com and buy their tool! It is an investment that you can sell
later if needed. ;-)
or find a "vag-com" clone on ebay for under $20 and read your own code if
you have a laptop.
Or have the code checked to see what is wrong maybe at one of the auto part
stores.

might burn excess gas even though that light is not blinking (blinking is
BAD)
Or it could just be a vacuum hose or loose gas cap.
won't know unless you read the code. ;-)
best to check!

Ed, hard to say. I would go to an Autozone and have them pull the code
- they do this free of charge. Other auto stores may do it too. They
will give you the code and suggested fixes. Generally, if the light is
'solid' (i.e., not flashing) and the car is running okay, it's
probably ok to drive. But I would still get the code. Once you have
that, you can Google it and get a wealth of information about it.
