Default 2009 Toyota Corolla

Toyota used the SEMA tuner and aftermarket mega-extravaganza in Las
Vegas to show the 10th generation of its Corolla sedan, which at 30
million units sold in 40 years, is the bestselling passenger car in
history. It also is important because one in three of the 390,000
people who buy Corollas annually trades in for a new one. Others trade
up to a Camry.

And the wise buy a BMW instead.

Depends upon what you want from a car.
My wife has a Corolla 1.4 GS. Bought new in 2001 now with 48k. Has never let
her down, and apart from the a/c button that disappeared inside the dash
once, fixed under guarantee, has never had any faults.
Regular servicing. Tyres and brake pads is all that's been spent on it
since she got it.

Personally I don't like the car, but it was my wifes choice. Helped by a
hefty discount. She was a receptionist at a Toyota main dealer at the time.
She loves the car, and I can't complain. My 528i E39 has cost me more in
maintenance and depreciation, so which of us is the wisest?

Depends. As regards reliability I take it you haven't had your car from
new so can't really say how it was treated before you owned it - and I'd
guess bought at older/higher miles than your wife's car is now?

Depreciation is near always higher percentage wise on large cars - but
then so is the driving pleasure. You pay's your money...

Had you bought your E39 new when they first came out the depreciation
would have been very different - they didn't depreciate at all in the
first year, at least in the UK, due to demand exceeding supply.

A fair point, but the one I was really making is that there are many reasons
for buying a particular car, and a BMW doesn't tick all of them.
My wife is more interested in a car that is reliable, reasonably
comfortable, and in her opinion, not too large. Her Corolla fits that bill
perfectly, especially as far as reliability is concerned.

I doubt she would have had as little trouble had she bought a BMW instead.

She's not interested in performance, apart from fuel consumption. It's quite
happy at 80 plus on the m/w, so as far as she is concerned it's fast enough.

She's driven my car quite a bit. She appreciates that it's quieter, and more
powerful, but apart from that she's not that impressed from a driving POV.
She doesn't mind driving, but doesn't enjoy driving in the way that others
might.

TBH most of the time I don't enjoy driving myself. It's OK if there's not
too much traffic around, but I find little pleasure in driving on busy
roads.

True - but a decent car can minimise that misery. ;-)

Going to Manchester tomorrow (from London). Decided I can't be bothered to
drive that long, even though I have a nice car with an adequate engine.

Just over 2 h on the train for 60 quid can't be bad. And I avoid the Friday
rush on the M1 on the way back the following day. Let's hope Virgin trains
keep to time...

Now, if only the thing would go at Eurostar/TGV speeds I would probably get
there in an hour-and-half.

Can you belive this? I did booked by phone (starting off with a tedious
voice-activated automatic booking system). At the end an operator came on
the line to take my credit card details. The line sounded 'distant' and,
sure enough, she was located in Bombay. When I asked about the weather she
told me it was winter and cold. Turned out to be 28 deg C...

Then I spoke to a bloke in Lisbon and asked him about the weather (you know,
that British obsession). He said it's been summer since August, and it was
pleasantly warm at 22 C. Talk about Relativity in action... :-)

In London it's 10 C. Not unpleasant, aksherly.
