Default Help! Plastic spare key doesn't work

While my parents left on holiday's this morning my dad forgot his
driving license wich is in the trunk of the car. Rather importent when
you rented a car for the time So he called me to search for his
second key...the only thing I found is a plastic spare key wich won't
work on the BMW Serie 7... I can turn the key but it the car doesn't
make any move... Neither does the trunk...

Is there someone who experienced the same thing? Are there any tricks?

    Thx in advance!

I think the plastic one only opens the trunk and glove box.

No, the plastic one will run the car. My guess is an aftermarket alarm
is interfering with the unlock function.

This is probably a chauffeur / valet key.

    It will open the doors.
It will start the car (but possibly with limited performance).
It will not open the boot (if deadlocked)
It won't open the glove compartment.

on older 7 series models it was just a question of getting another key cut
on the right blank, but with more recent ones I suspect this may not work.

Unless you are old enough AND included on the insurance and have his
permission, you shouldn't be driving your dad's car while he is on holiday!

Uh, didn't he say his dad asked him to find his driving license in the trunk
    of the 7?

If the key will open the door, can't you push the interior trunk release?

4am one night when a friend of mine was on holiday, his XJ8 which was locked
in a locked garage, was stolen and crashed into a wall only about 400m away.
His 16yo son was apparently fast asleep [in the house] at the time.

Whilst the police could prove nothing, the insurers were most reluctant to
    pay out...

In this case the OP is 24 and has his own BMW, so I believe him now.

No interior trunk release on 7 series.

    How it works is: -

If the boot is not deadlocked (with a master key in the boot lock) then the
boot will lock and unlock with the electric locks, operated from a front
door button / release, a key in the door or a master key* in the boot lock
    [or remote].

If the boot is deadlocked (with a master key in the boot lock) then the boot
will only unlock with a master key in the boot lock.

If the car is deadlocked (with a key in the [driver's] door lock) then the
boot will separately lock and unlock with the master key in the boot lock,
but the cabin will remain deadlocked. Whether the boot remains deadlocked
depends on the angle of the barrel on key withdrawal.

    * because IIRC a chauffeur key will not enter / turn in the boot lock.

Thanks for the explanation - guess I'll stick with my E46 where the plastic
    key seems to unlock everything.

I belive the plastic thin key is a wallet key, not a valet key.
I don't know what it opens, but it should be a full replacement of your main
    key.
It is thin so it fits in the wallet, not so the valet can have it.

In fact, if you are interested in wallets, then I can advise you on one brand of wallets called Wallor. I myself ordered this wallet not so long ago and was very happy. Try to see the options on their site, I am sure you can find something
