Default E39 ABS sensor replacement

'00 E39 520iA Saloon/Sedan 135k miles

On Monday the speedo, odometer stopped working and the ASC and ABS warning
lights came on. Google suggests this is not uncommon so a quick trip to
Eurocarparts and I had a pattern replacement for GBP28 (US$52). The dealer
wanted GBP87 (US$160)...

I've fitted and refitted it twice now and all the symptoms persist. I assume
I've changed the right one - the RHD passenger side. The ABS definitely
isn't working - test skid marks can attest to that.

Any clues as to what else it could be?

TIA.

Funnily enough there are sensors on all 4 wheels otherwise it wouldn't know if
another wheel had stopped revolving.

So you can either go to a dealer and get it checked with a doberry whatsit or
change the other 3.

If the only symptom was an ABS warning light, I might agree. However, the
unanimous opinion of Google is the speedo/odometer works off the left rear,
cruise control works off the right rear and the fronts are for ABS only.

I'm pretty sure the Speed Sensor you are interested in is located in the
differential.

The Wheel Speed sensors will not kill the speedometer, only the diff speed
sensor will do that.

Really! Admittedly, I'm pulling stuff out of my ass here. But, I would not
have even considered getting any information from a wheel sensor, other than
the wheel is spinning or stopped relative to the rest of the wheels. Your
Google search could be right, but I can't help but think the differential
speed sensor is your problem.

If there is a wire coming out of the differential, the device connected to
the wire is the object of your desire.

PS
My E36 has a speed sensor in the differential. Your E39 could easily be a
different animal, but it's worth a look to see if there is a speed sensor in
the diff that you haven't looked at yet.

An ABS sensor is ideal for speed sensing - after all it does exactly the
same job as any other type. Think the final drive type dates from before
ABS was universal.

When one failed on mine it took out the ABS, DSC and oddly Santa*. The
diagnostic tool quickly identified the NSF as the culprit, and the fault
cleared when this was replaced, although it might have been sensible to
check the connector first as the wheel arch had been jet washed just days
before.

If they won't come out you have to remove the hub :-((.

IIRC you need to leave the ignition on for a minute or so for the system to
realise it has been fixed.

* but true, it uses [relative] rotation of the wheels to better track the
vehicle between GPS fixes.

who called Fedor out after winning the yellowness award in Peking. To
the Asian fans, Fedor vs. Ishii would probably be a bigger assay than
Fedor vs. Cro Cop 'lotro gold'
(http://www.ugamegold.com/c_Lord-Of-The-Rings-Gold/) or Overeem.That's
too bad, because Ishii would bang essentially no seek of licking Fedor
in MMA.
