Default 2001 Caravan PCM replacement, DYI?

Getting code P0601 using the ignition key to check codes from check engine
light being on.
Looking in the Haynes manual seems like it is fairly easy to get to. Do I
need to use any electronic tools to complete this job? Is this a
do-it-yourself job, or is it better left to the pros?

Thanks in advance, Ken

You can replace the PCM but the dealer will have to program it. If you have
a gray key (SKIM vehicle theft) the car will not start until the PCM gets
the secret code installed.

Thanks, for the input. My mechanic not working at a Chrysler dealer has his
own shop, wants to put in a used PCM. Would that work, without the secret
code you speak about? He claims he can program the used one to work. Total
Cost 500 to 600 dollars. If I get a new PCM only the dealer can program it,
total cost around 1000 dollars maybe more. Does this sound correct? How
often do these PCM's fail? My 2001 Caravan has 122k miles on it. Do they
normally last longer then that? Seems like an expensive repair for this to
be a common occurrence.

Thanks, Ken

OK thanks, after doing some more reading on this online I figured out the
gray key your talking about is the ignition key. I have a black key, no
anti-thief system.

Swapping out PCM or Body control module could be a bad mistake and I
wouldn't recommend doing it. It may cause more problems then what you have
now. The computers talk to one another thru the bus and if one tells the
other it has something such as an alarm and you don't have it, the other
module will learn this and really screw this up. Have you priced a reman PCM
from the dealer?? That's sounds like way to much money to spend on a used
PCM.
