Newsservers occasionally renumber their messages. Also, with so many
ISP's cutting back newsgroups, or eliminating them entirely, there has
been a noticeable drop in posts, especially alt.* groups.

I found I had to clear out all of my old (local) postings/headers/etc. in
order to get new messages. This happens every once in a while. I usually
notice the problem when I don't see any new messages in any newsgroups from
that server for several days.
