Where to start...? Ok - what do you mean when you say the batteries look
fine? Have you put a volt meter on the battery (only one in your car) and
measured the voltage? Do you have good, tight, clean connections at the
battery? Is this the original battery? Have you tried charging the
battery? Jumping it off another car?
Can you elaborate on your phrase rattling kind of noise? Is it a click, or
a series of clicks? If so, you're likely facing a low battery condition.
Could well be that your battery simply died. Factory batteries are
typically good for 5-6 years or normal use, though they have been known to
go longer. Sitting for a couple of weeks is a good way of finding out that
your battery is on its last legs.
If you charge the battery and the car starts, or if you jump it off of
another car and the car starts, then you pretty well know you've got to head
out for a new battery. Don't be fooled by battery claims. There's not much
difference between brands of batteries. Price is not a good way of ensuring
you bought a great battery. Get one that physically fits properly and
supplies at least the same cold cranking amps as your original battery. If
you live in a cold climate, feel free to get one with a lot more cca
capacity. Basic Wal-Mart batteries are as good as any other.
