Re: Serpentine belt. During the first 10-12 years of driving the Bonneville, I've tossed the
old Serpentine belts in the spare tire well when a new one was
purchased. They all had the little cracks in then but no chunks missing.
Some I lost track of the mileage on them but 3 of them had well over
150,000 miles. I don't have the paperwork handy right now, but I bet I
only put 4 belts on it in 18 years and that included the original.
Bending them backwards never cracked any of them in half. Its only a 90
second job to R & R a belt on a 1991 3800V6.
For many years I rotated the old belts. If one did break, two more were
in the trunk. In 2003 I finally spent the $$ for a new belt. It
currently has 63,000 miles on it and still looks good. Still have 2 in
the trunk. The original belt I finally threw away in 2004.
Did I mention I also have radiator / heater hoses in the trunk too?

The belt on the Park Avenue is original with 75,000 but I will be buying
one before heading to central PA next month, as I have no spare. This
one is also easy to change as infamous belt blocking motor mount is not
present on this car.
I've never had a V belt or Serpentine Belt break on any car I ever owned
(since 1980).
