Trying to help someone troubbleshoot an electrical problem
with a hyundai accent 1999 w/manual transmission.

Problem is car running fine & smooth w/normal accl. and power
and good performance on hills.
Suddenly check-engine light starts flashing on dash and engine
loses power runs rough w/slight backfire sound every minute or so.

Check voltage across battery with engine idling and shows 8 - 9
volts range but alternator is brand new and has already been
tested and is OK itself.

Cheched fuses and they are all OK.

So is it a computer gone screwy or a very well hidden electrical
problem somewhere?

8-9 volts is way low. Disconnect the battery and see what it reads with no
load. Take it to Auto Zone or Advance Auto or one of those places, and get
the battery load tested.

At that voltage, any number of problems could present themselves and you'll
drive yourself nuts trying to track them.

Check the voltage at the alternator terminal and at the battery. Check for
power at both wires in the alternator electrical connector with the key on
(one supplies power to the alternator, the other is for the warning lamp).
You may have a blown fuse somewhere.

A flashing check engine lamp typically indicates a misfire, but if you
have low system voltage as you're indicating, just about anything could
happen.
