Default 2000 Sunfire radio issue

My wife has a 2000 sunfire. The radio has stopped working. I checked
the fuse and its ok, even swapped it with a known working one and no
change. The radio is just dead as a doornail. It will eluminate when
you turn the headlight or interior lights on but thats it. I am going
to crack the dash open and just check for loose connections first.
But does anyone here have any suggestions?

I've had that problem on my Pontiac. The radio lights work directly
off the headlight switch and the reostat in the volume knob wears out
after a few years. The point where the speaker wires plug into the
radio can get loose and break contact. They're not easy to fix. I
cleaned and straightened the connections twice, but they still come
loose after a few weeks. I've also had problems with water in the
speaker connections shorting them out. Don't ask how the water got on
them, I'm still trying to figure that out. When the radio works it
sounds great.
