I have 2 Garmins, and both seem to lose connectivity to the satellite
a lot in the Subaru.

Put them in my other cars, and no issues. I bought an antenna that
runs out to the roof, and helps somewhat.

Thought maybe it was the radar detector interfering, but I don't think
it is that, since uplugging it and still have issues...

I have an el cheapo Invion that wife gave me a couple of years ago. I
seldom use it but it seems OK in my '03.

Now wife wants me to buy her a good unit for Christmas for use in her '08.

Now I wonder what I should buy.

Could there be an issue with window tinting? Some folks say it
interferes with AM radio reception.

I have a Garmin 2610 that I usually keep in the Infiniti G35 coupe,
where it works well. Move it to the wife's 1999 Forester and it loses
satellites all the time.

The difference is that the Infiniti has a large, sloped windshield so
that the Garmin has a good view of the sky. The Forester has a steep
windshield so the roof blocks the sky.

The solution was to buy an external antenna for the Garmin ($99, if I
recall correctly), and put it on the front fender. With that set-up it
never loses the satellites. I don't know if the current Garmin models
accept an external antenna.

Hi,

I think it depends on the model and its intended applications. I use a
"waypoint" only Garmin for hiking that has their new "high sensitivity"
receiver, and it doesn't accept an external antenna. I've yet to use it
in a vehicle where it loses satellites, though in some, it does seem to
be breathing hard to hang onto 'em.

At one time, I believe the Garmin website listed all the accessories
(including external antennae) that would work on a given model. Might be
worth a visit to see if they still provide that kind of info? They also
have the update software available there, though I can't say if that'll
help or not: it may be my imagination, but it seems the first update I
performed DID improve the time to acquire satellites, while the next one
SLOWED things down. However, the readings I get after it, especially for
altitude, have generally improved. It's kind of a crap shoot...

I have a Garmin Map76 that works perfectly fine if I pop it into the
bottle holder on the dash. Sometimes I put it in my shirt pocket and
there it has, on occasion, have trouble, but relocks rather quickly.
As I also run a Valentine1 all the time, I can say that I have never
observed any interference.
