Default '07 Outback Wagon blew out dipstick today

My wife's '07 Outback wagon rolled in the garage smoking and smelling
tonight. I popped the hood and finally found the front transfer case
dipstick hanging loose in the hole, and oil running down the right side of
the engine and transmission and dripping on the catalytic converter.

The lube level was down to the lower mark, so I topped it off and cleaned it
up the best I could and firmly seated the dipstick.

Any ideas why it came loose? Is there a breather that might be plugged?
Any ideas?

Some rather annoying person once said:

"You need to call a professional service technician. Don't
fuck with it, you might blow yourself up."

Same person also had the following sage advice:

"You are in way over your head. Call a professional and don't
forget to PAY him or her. Now, Beat It."

Thanks for the good advise.

It's going to the shop today!
