Default 1992 Loyale Automatic Transmission PROBLEM

I have a 1992 Loyale that is MINT condition. It has 21000 original miles.
The other day it stopped changing gears. It is an automatic and stays in 1st
gear when I put it in Drive. It will not shift any higer. It will go into
2nd if I move it to the 2 on the shifter. It goes in Reverse (R) and seems
to work fine when backing up.

Subaru is saying it needs a complete Transminssion.

Any Ideas on anything else it could be?

Plesae help

It sounds to me like you need to clean and inspect the transmission
governor.

Check out this page.

On my '93 the cover was easy to reach from the top and the governor
assembly slipped out without removing the two screws for the mount plate.
If the gear is chewed up and you can't find a used one locally go to
www.ultimatesubaru.net and ask around. The going rate on a used one seems
to be about $25. The one you have may just need to be cleaned.

Later,
Joe
