Default callapsed radiator hose

I have a '99 legacy outback w/ 125K miles, it was overheating, temeprature
gage quite high, but no boil over. I noticed that the top radiator hose was
collapsing. Ok, old hoses, I thought. So I replaced hoses and still it
would collapse. I also noticed the coolant overflow container was quite
full. I finally replaced the radior cap, even though it looked OK, and now
the level in the coolant overflow container is correct and it hasn't over
heated again. Has anyone seen this problem before? I added some Bar's head
gasket stop leak to the collant, in hopes that I can prevent or mitigate any
head gasket leaks. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Sounds like the cap's one way valve was stuck.
