I have to disagree with you on whether or not the experiences of others
is valuable.
If you were buying a 1987 model car, do you really think that a Yugo
would be as likely to go as far as a 1987 Honda Civic or a Ford Taurus?
While you're correct that one can't always determine how well a car is
maintained, each vehicle model has specific limitations. If bought an
Oldsmobile Cutlass Diesel, no matter how well you maintained it, chances
are that you would run into problems because of the limitations of the
diesel engine (although some of the engine lasted a long time).
Likewise, if you bought a used 1987 Ford Taurus, your chances of having
many trouble-free miles is higher than if you bought a 1985 Olds Cutlass
Ciera with the diesel engine or a '87 Yugo.
Well maintained automobiles have limitations on how long they last.
If you buy a used car model that doesn't last long, it's not going to
last as long as a used car that is a model that does last long.
IMHO, what you're saying is that how reliable a vehicle is has nothing
to do with how long it will last when you buy it used.
