GM's Pontiac Vibe, Toyota's Matrix probed on windows

General Motors Corp.'s Pontiac Vibe sport wagon and Toyota Motor
Corp.'s Matrix wagon and Corolla sedan are under investigation by U.S.
regulators after motorists complained power windows get stuck and, in
some cases, shatter, Bloomberg News reported today.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has begun an
engineering analysis, the second-step in the safety review process,
Bloomberg reported. The agency and automakers received 503 complaints,
according to NHTSA's Web site, and the investigation may affect
676,747 vehicles from the 2003 and 2004 model years.

Motorists complained about side-front power windows getting stuck,
making popping noises and shattering during operation. Thirty-six
injuries were reported.

The Vibe is made at the GM-Toyota joint-venture plant New United Motor
Manufacturing Inc. in Fremont, California. About half of NHTSA's
initial inquiries lead to a recall.
