Hey all I have a 1989 celica st, the blinkers are possesed. When I signal
for a left or right turn without the headlights on, all is good. BUT when I
turn on the headlights, the left turn indicator at the dash stays on and
stays on, and when I signal left, the blinkers flash REAL fast as if I have
a burnt out light bulb.The right side operates normal with or with out the
head lights on. All the bulbs are good and I checked the grounds in the
blinker circuit. Im thinking its the flasher element. Any ideas what could
cause this.

If the flasher was bad, you would have the same thing on the left and right
side. I think that the left side ground is bad or you have a bad bulb.
Another possibility is the combination switch. You will need a wiring
diagram to properly diagnose the condition.

In my experience, the rapid flashing indicates a poor or nil ground at the
bulb. I occasionally have this in the front turn signals of the 97 Camry.
I solved it in a very professional manner...I leave the flasher flashing,
exit the car and give the area where the flasher is misbehaving a good
flathanded bitch slap, and that's the end of it....and it works fine for the
next six weeks or so, until I have to spank it again.

On the head light/blinker grounds, am I correct in that the center wire of
the connectors is the ground? I think it is but I will test it with the ohm
meter first. Can I just run another ground wire to the body? Or would I be
better off running a gound to the engine?

I do not know offhand which wire in the connector is the ground so yes, the
best way is to test.

Yes, you can just run another ground wire to the body. Use the same or
thicker gauge wire. I would just loosen a nearby bolt or screw, attach a
lug connector, and ground it under the bolt/screw head. There is no need to
ground it to the engine.

well me being smarter than the average bear, I decided to mock up a ground
from the battery to the front turn signal assembly. It promptly blew the
turn signal fuse. Another thing I noticed was that the rear blinker is on
continuously if the head lights are on.
Ok now what?

The fuse probably blew because you grounded a hot wire instead of the ground
wire.

A turn signal lamp that is not continuously is a sign of a burnt bulb. I
would change the front turn signal bulb.

nope i grounded the outer part of the light. I ohmed it out and it is the
ground wire, but when I turn on the headlights I am getting voltage to the
blinker as well.
I also replaced the bulb
