Well, we don't have the Whtie House.

It's a mixed blessing, to be sure. I worked very hard for local Democrats
and it was with considerable misgivings. We're going down a bumpy road and
the bigger rocks lie ahead. Do we Democrats want to be in a position to
share the blame for what's coming? Frankly, I wanted to pick up seats in
the House but not take it outright and, maybe, pick up enough seats in the
Senate to prevent more Haynesworth and Carswell nominations.
I noticed a report this morning that the Administration's fall-back position
is to do whatever they can, via administration (i.e., rule-changing,
enforcement), to advance their "agenda." It is, first, difficult to see how
much could be accomplished in advancing an "agenda" (SS reform, for example,
is off the table) with rule-changing and it is disappointing to think that,
rather than attempt to work with Congress to resolve problems, that the
Administration's intent is to more or less build up Fortress White House and
hold off the Democrats as long as they can.
Fixing Iraq is still a priority and a focus on finger-pointing will be
counter-productive. If the Administration digs in its heels and won't work
with Congress, the only option left to Congress to occupy its time will be
to hold hearings on things that, frankly, I'd rather not be hearing about.
It *might* be good for Republican prospects in '08 but it would be very bad
for the country in the interim. It also might be very bad for Republican
prospects in '08, if any decent-sized scandals are uncovered and promoted
effectively. Digging in is a real crapshoot.
If I were Bush, I'd extend the olive branch, work a deal with Pelosi to take
certain items off the investigative agenda and gamble that I could do enough
positive things to boost Republican fortunes in '08 AND secure the country's
future a bit better.
One CAN get things done with an opposition Congress. Nixon was good at it
and so was Clinton. It's not the end of the world for Bush unless he chooses
to make it so.
I've written to my new Senator-Elect, Amy Klobuchar, and reminded her that
our top priority is fixing problems, not affixing blame. That's also the
emphasis of the other liberals here at work. Pelosi's anounced program
doesn't involve affixing blame, it involves legislation for families.
