Need new universals on the Supra. There are three of them; a front shaft
and a center carrier/bearing, and a rear shaft. This isn't really
something I want to do on ramps or jack stands...or is it?

and following on, you can remove the driveshaft from the car with the U-
Joints. Hmmmm....

I went to different places, the best estimates I got were from Toyota (~
$225 for all three joints) and a really good tire/repair shop that said
$55 an hour, and an estimate of 2.5 hours. U-Joints are $55 from my local
Toyota dealer (which turns out better than On-Line prices I found!) or
$18 from AutoZone...

Think I'll have a look and see how tough this is going to be...

Some vehicles, like coaches, heavy trucks, ect. are sensitive to shaft
to yoke and yoke to yoke match up. You might want to scribe on each, how
they are exactly matched up before you remove them and press the joints out.

This can save alot of trouble later with re balancing shafts and
vibration problems.

The directions in the TSRM say to mark everything with matchmarks before
removing the various pieces.

Jobs like this make me wish I had a lift. It's not that hard, but I just
put the car on the ramps, and you need to have the rear wheel free to be
able to rotate them to get to the bolts at the differential. Not
something I want to do on jack stands. You remove the 4 bolts, remove the
center carrier and slide the shaft out of the transmission. Not hard, and
nothing is rusted (because there was an oil leak, everything is coated
with oil!)

But I can't spin the rear wheels on ramps, and I ain't doing this on jack
stands!

And I also discovered one of the bolts holding the center carrier is
gone! I hope it fell out and didn't get snapped off at some point in the
car's life!

Interesting...I found a bolt on the garage floor when I was replacing the
plugs and wires earlier. Wonder if this is where it came from. I couldn't
find anyplace else for the bolt to go.

Boy, I wish I had a lift...

Yup! If you look at the link in the OP, it's a TSRM for a '90, IIRC.
There's one for a '90 and there's one for an '87, but the '87 isn't
complete.

It sure comes in handy, and is the reason I installed a coumputer in the
garage!!
