Something similar just happened to a friend's Supra (same transmission).
He had to install a new torque converter. But, just out of curiosity, have
you checked the fluid level?
Also, with the OVERDRIVE button pushed IN, is the O/D OFF indicator
flashing? If it is it means there is a problem with the ECU and related
items, most common on this tranny is one or more of the shift solenoids
has burned out, and needs to be replaced. What happens in this state is
the tranny goes into 'limp' mode, and IIRC when you select Drive it goes
right into OD.
I have been driving a Supra like this for 4 years...I just shift through
the gears.
HINT!!! (Oh, BTW, you said 2nd was OK...did it shift from 1st to 2nd, or
did it just stay in 2nd?)Until you get it fixed, start in first, and shift
to 2nd with the accelerator depressed. If you have to shift from Drive to
2nd, depress the accelerator. DO NOT SHIFT INTO FIRST UNLESS YOU ARE
STOPPED!!! The last person who owned my Supra didn't realize this, and now
I have to replace all the U-joints...
