Head of cancer center warns of cell phone risks
The Associated Press

Copyright AP 2007

The head of a prominent cancer research institute issued an
unprecedented warning to his faculty and staff Wednesday: Limit cell
phone use because of the possible risk of cancer.
The warning from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of
Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, is contrary to numerous studies that don't
find a link between cancer and cell phone use, and a public lack of
worry by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Herberman is basing his alarm on early, unpublished data. He says it
takes too long to get answers from science and he believes people should
take action now - especially when it comes to children.
"Really at the heart of my concern is that we shouldn't wait for a
definitive study to come out, but err on the side of being safe rather
than sorry later," Herberman said.
No other major academic cancer research institutions have sounded such
an alarm about cell phone use. But Herberman's advice is sure to raise
concern among many cell phone users and especially parents.
In the memo he sent to about 3,000 faculty and staff Wednesday, he says
children should use cell phones only for emergencies because their
brains are still developing.
Adults should keep the phone away from the head and use the speakerphone
or a wireless headset, he says. He even warns against using cell phones
in public places like a bus because it exposes others to the phone's
electromagnetic fields.

Do me a favor...call someone you love and talk to them on your cell
phone for a few days...?? And inhale your comments to me on this subject
and choke on them...

When it comes to health care and research, the University of Pittsburg
has few peers.

I'll add to what they said and include wireless computer connections
and cordless home phones in this.

I've been telling people about this for the better part of 2 decades and
I've taken a lot of shit because of it. I've even stopped my vehicle and
gotten out when a friend received a cell phone call and would not defer
it unitl we got to our destination.

I have a fantasy. I'd like to see all cell towers crumble to the ground.
They are the symbols of group think and greed while thumbing our noses
at human frailty. * (disclaimer) Of course I'm not saying I will be
the one to fell said towers..

There is no fix for this. There is no new chip or earpiece or wireless
set up... The technology is flawed as it relates to human health...I'm
as sure of this as I am of anything...Sell your motorola stock..

Now...""""TOMES""""" et al.... tell me 'you're opinion again..???

Wait let me put my tin foil hat on first..

No published data. He's an alarmist who doesn't like cell phones,
hoping to scare people. He should be locked in a padded cell and the
keys thrown down a storm sewer at night.

That's the REAL reason. Greed and the desire to be more productive, you
don't like that or cell phones therefore lets scare people with BS.

hehehe, you need one ;-)

Do you use any electricity in your home? Do you listen to the radio
or watch TV? Do you talk on a wired telephone? Do you use a
computer? Do you use a microwave oven? Have you ever had a MRI?

If you do any of these things, you subject yourself to the exact same
fields as cell phones create. They are magnetic fields and they are
NOT harmful. Any flow of electrical current creates magnetic fields,
the intensity of which is determined by the magnitude of the current.
These magnetic fields extend out from their source for many hundreds
of feet, in some cases for thousands of miles. Magnetic fields are
non-ionizing radiation and although they can effect cells of the body,
the power needed to do any damage is very high. Much higher than that
available from a cell phone or any other source of magnetic fields you
would encounter on a daily basis (unless you were to crawl into a
microwave oven and turn it on).

What I have stated isn't just my opinion, it's a fact. I'm 62 years
old and I have worked around radio frequency magnetic fields all of my
life. I'm still alive and in good health, I know of only one of my
fellow technicians who has passed away, throat cancer ( he smoked up
until the day he was diagnosed). So there is no reason for you to run
in fear when someone close to you answers a cell phone.

We should tie him down within 25 feet of a 1 megawatt ERP radar antenna
and see how his brains and gonads fair.

One of my 'cleaning' stations on the Enterprise was in the Island. The
area was where the gigantic surface search radar's delay tubes
ran up and down. One little leak and I would have been toast....

I trained as a 26V in the Army. I dealt with LOS microwave and tropospheric
scatter multiplexing equipment, klystrons, and waveguides. Cell phones don't
bother me. I have a feeling that if we acted on your suggestion, Pisano
would suddenly not be worried about the RF output of a cell phone anymore!

Good post Jack. I wish others would operate on facts
and not hearsay or equivelant.

A few years ago I (in our OEM machinery service dep-
artment) was handing out new cell phones to the out-
side techs when questions of safety arose and I dec-
ided to find out what I could.

The only comprehensive study I could find was done
by a Swedish safety group. Their methods included
a test dummy with many RF antennas placed at dif-
ferent areas. They found great differences between
brands (the most likely reason for not seeing tests
done by the brand owners IMHO) but found safety
was really only comprimised by using an earphone
and allowing it to dangle alongside your face and
neck as the phone was operated.

I have not seen such a study since, more's the pity.
