WHY are Democrats against drilling for our own oil?
Can you explain, please. I can't understand it.
Why keep shipping our dollars overseas?

You said 'sanity', I think it's insane to keep beholden to people who hate
us.

Because there's not nearly enough of it. We use 25%
of the oil that is produced in the world. We have
about 3% of the known oil reserves. We cannot drill
our way to energy independence.

35 years ago, during the OPEC oil embargo, we began
to talk of the necessity of energy independence. At
that time we imported about a third of our oil. Now
it's about two-thirds. Nothing effective has been
done to reduce our dependence on imported oil. The
only way to achieve energy independence is to use
less. A lot less. Now, finally, with oil prices
rising, we're once again talking about ways to do
just that.

If we were to start drilling for additional oil in
this country it's unlikely we could produce enough
to bring prices down much. But if prices were to
drop significantly, you can be sure that energy
independence would be a whole lot less important in
Washington. The only way we're actually going to
get anything done about foreign oil is if it's too
expensive not to.

Well, Scott, looks like you're right: according to the
DOE that 3% is a bit of an overestimate:
