"DENVER ‹ Former president Jimmy Carter called Republican presidential
candidate John McCain a "distinguished Naval officer," but said the
Arizona senator has been "milking every possible drop of advantage" from
his time served as a prisoner of war in Vietnam."
"Carter also spoke of the segregation he saw growing up and said racism
is "always a subtle factor" in American politics. He called this
November's election possibly the most "momentous, important" election in
the U.S. in the past 100 years, and he was confident that Obama could
overcome the racial divide.
But he said race could ultimately be the deciding factor. "If he loses
by 2 or 3%, then I would certainly say that the racial issue was a major
factor," Carter said."
It's always about race isn't it jimmy.
Jimmy's military career is pale compared to John McCain. I can see how
he seems so jealous and bitter. I suspect that jimmy will call for a
recount based on his perceived racist vote deficiency. A typical
democrat elitist. |

McCain, in response to Jay Leno's question about his numerous
houses: "Could I just mention to you Jay, that in a moment of
seriousness, I spent five and a half years in a prison cell,
I didn't have a house, I didn't have a kitchen table, I didn't
have a table, I didn't have a chair. I spent those five and
half years not because I wanted to get a house when I got back
home."
Sounds to me like Carter may have a valid point.

Are you trying to claim that there is no one out there that
will refuse to vote for Obama because of his color? I admit
that most of them are probably Republicans who wouldn't vote
for a Democrat anyway, but I'm not about to claim that there
are no racist Democrats.
And to preemptively answer the response that 90% of African
Americans voting for Obama is an indication of racism as well,
you must remember that John Kerry received 88% of the black
vote and Al Gore got 90%.
We've come a long way in this country over the last few decades
and overt racism is no longer acceptable in polite company, but
racism is not completely dead. In a very close contest, it
could very well be a factor.

Carter graduated 59th out of 820 from the US Naval Academy in
1946 and served in the Navy for seven years, until his father
died and he returned home to take over the family farm.
(McCain, by the way, graduated 894th out of 899 from the same
institution twelve years later.) Carter was never a POW, but
his military record was nothing to be ashamed of. |

You have a highly biased attitude. You should be ashamed of yourself. |

I agree. Good for him to have become wealthy enough to have however many
houses he has.
The issue wasn't how many houses he had, but that he didn't know how
many he had. |

Nobody cares that he doesn't know. His wife, bless her, is wealthy beyond
most of our wildest dreams, and she has bought townhouses and condos that
her husband quite likely has never been to. Apparently, he lives on a ranch
in Arizona that has at least 4 houses on it. I'd bet that he has no clue how
many pairs of shoes are in the closet of the house he lives in in Arizona.
Big deal. He very well might not know how much money is in the bank. So

The man grew up among blacks & witnessed tons of racism towards his friends.
Of course he would take that issue into account.

I heard an interview w/Jimmy Carter on NPR's "Talk of the Nation";
specifically "This American Moment"; I didn't hear jealousy & bitterness - I
heard optimism. Besides being optimistic about Obama being elected &
restoring the U.S. to its former well-regarded place in the world, he
expressed gratitude that both a woman & a black guy could now get this far
in the US, whereas in the past... just wouldn't have happened. Was saying
that his grandchildren & gr-grandchild have been born into a better place as
far as discrimination goes - to them, as they grow up, it will be more
history than current reality; that they just won't witness the blockades
that used to be in place for women & minorities. His overall message was
upbeat - that of hope.

Because it's kinda difficult to advocate for & connect with the average
American when you don't even know how many houses you own.

But it's not even a fair question. Even if he had answered the question
properly, the case could then be made that McCain is unable to connect. If
he said, I have 8 houses in 5 different cities in 4 different states, he is
still unable to connect. His wife is the money machine in the house, she
bought the houses and condos. She says, "Say honey, let's buy a condo in La
Jolla," and he says (absent mindedly because he knows she'll buy the house
no matter what he says), "Sure, dear." Then, several years later, somebody
asks, "Senator, how many houses do you have?" and McCain can't remember all
of the "Yes, dears." over the years. Big deal.
Please don't ask me how many pairs of shoes I own, much less how big the
herd of shoes that my wife keeps under her control. I can't begin to guess
how many shoes I have. I have a tr4uck full of construction equipment, I
have no idea what I have. I can come close, I suppose.
I can't be a regular guy though, I have 5 TV sets. None of them are
flat-screens though, so maybe I am a regular guy after all. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
