| | | 1992 Toyota Tercel Headlights not working Hi there,
I would like to thank everyone who reads this post. If this is not the
place I should post my question, please provide me with the proper
location.
I was driving home today and when I pulled up to the garage I suddenly
noticed that both headlights of my 1992 Toyota Tercel stopped working.
I ran some tests, and this is what I found.
1. High beams don't work either, so I really doubt that it is the
bulbs
2. Running lights are working
3. Tail lights are working
4. All signals are working
Does anybody have an idea of what could be wrong with my headlights?
Thanks,
Andrew |

Get out your owners manual, and find where the fuses are for the headlight
circuits. Check them next.

Andrew,
The most likely cause of having both headlights out is that both bulbs are
burnt out. If you have a volt meter or 12 volt tester, you should check to
see if there is current at the bulb connectors when the headlight switch is
in the on position.
The combination switch is probably good, as are the headlight relays, so
start by checking or replacing the bulbs.

Or only drive during the day. |

| | | Re: 1992 Toyota Tercel Headlights not working During the weekend I finally managed to get some time (and some warm
weather) to look things over. Here is what I found out:
1. Bulbs are fine
2. Fuses are fine
So, since I didn't want to drive just during the day time, I checked
the headlight relay and that was mounted fine. I started following the
wiring out of the headlight to the relay and I found that the wire had
been rubbing against something and over time had just snapped. So,
after getting my wire strippers and some electrician's tape, I
reconnected the severed wire and my headlights are back up and
running. Thank you to all who replied and tried to help. |

Was this wire inside the car, or under the hood? If under the hood,
electrician's tape is not appropriate for the job. The wires should be
soldered and protected with heat shrink tubing, or crimped and then
protected with heat shrink tubing. Since it's almost impossible to find a
correctly designed crimp tool in your typical home or hardware store,
soldering's probably your better bet. |

| | | Re: 1992 Toyota Tercel Headlights not working Since the wires were under the hood I will follow your advice and
solder and heat shrink them. Thanks! |

Heat shrink them twice. Make the first piece smaller than the second by 1/2"
on either end. |
