Default Dealership makes the difference!

Earlier today, I visited a dealership very close to my good old Saturn
dealership (turns out the company owns both lots, which covers GM, Toyota,
etc.) and is just around the corner (never noticed this dealership before).

I talked to the salesman, told him about the outstanding service I get at
the Saturn dealership and it turns out that because they are owned by both,
I will get the benefit of the same level of service at their Toyota
dealership when I am ready to buy.

Answers to my questions were quick and accurate.

* Teams designated to the buyer - always the same service team to handle my
car.

* Free car wash with every service.

* Free Roadside Assistance with purchase of the extended warranty.

The salesman told me to compile my list of options and when the vehicle of
my choice arrives, I asked him to give me a call, then I return for the test
drive, then if satisfied, discuss the numbers.

Not to feel pressured, I told him I'm in no rush.

Life is good!

I got my Extended Warranty free. I was going to buy it, but passed on the
$1250 price tag. I was going to buy one from a Lexus dealer in CT (you
DON'T have to buy the warranty from the dealer you bought the car from,
and some offer them at deep discounts! A better warranty from the Lexus
dealer was $400 less!)

I decided not to buy any warranty.

Then, I get a letter from Toyota, saying that since my Scion was a Toyota
Certified Used Vehicle, the warranty was FREE. With Roadside Assistance.

Guess I can burn my AAA card...

Shop around. Toyota of Greenfield (MA) is listed as one of the best places
to buy a warranty. Also, that Lexus dealer in CT...can't remember
now...don't have to!

You bought a used car, that's why it was free.

I am shopping for a new car.

You can still beat up the dealer!
Extended warranties are really nothing but profit for the dealer. You're
buying an insurance policy, and there is a LOT of room for profit there.

What do they want to charge you?

I could try to get a price quote on the Internet - not sure which site would
provide such valuable info on that.

When it comes time to discuss numbers, it always helps to have printouts on
hand.

Got a color printer? Go buy a package of the biggest paper it will handle.
Make a huge sign saying "Do Not Wash This Car Today, Please". Take the sign
to Staples or whoever does laminating in your area. Pay the dollar or two to
have it laminated. Put it on the dashboard if you bring the car in for
service when the temp is below freezing. No matter how good the service may
be, they will not show up at your house to de-ice your door locks so you can
get into the car.

Extended "warranties" are actually insurance policies. I am not a fan of
them in general, but if you decide to get one, the only one I recommend is
the Toyota Extra Care. Aftermarket service contracts are often so full of
loopholes that they basically cover nothing.

Extended warranties are NOT needed for Toyotas, unless, of course, they are
sold for under, say $100.
