Whoa - why would you need to defrost with the A/C on?

Mebbe I'm missing something.

Almost all cars since 1999 have the AC running when the defroster is on. I
think it's a damn nuisance...if I want the AC on, *I'LL* turn it on!

Sometimes, the defroster alone can't deal with the humidity INSIDE the car,
from multiple passengers, and moisture evaporating from wet foot mats.
You've probably seen fools driving down the road with all windows fogged up.
Turning on the A/C produces dry air to help with the problem. In some cars,
the A/C comes on automatically when you use the defroster. In others, you
have a choice. By the way, A/C does not mean "cold". When defrosting, you
turn the temp selector to warm. Now, you have dry heat, and it works in the
same way forced air heat helps clear the fog out of the bathroom during a
shower.

All cars should offer a choice of using it or not. For half the year, I find
I don't need it. Why affect mpg by using the A/C when it's not needed?

Well, my A/C light has never come on with the defroster. Not in any car,
not even hubby's new(er) Scion.

And it doesn't interfere with the temperature? Weird. I didn't think the
A/C would even function with the A/C on.

Interesting.

Wish I'd known this back when we lived in subzero Colebrook, NH. I'm one of
those fools with fogged windows. Never knew this little factoid.

:-P

If you are blowing air at the front windshield to clear up frost, you
probably do not want to be blowing humid/damp air at the windshield
(which will just add to the existing frost). The AC is used to
dehumidify the air before it is blown at the windshield that needs
defrosting.

Some cars will light up the AC light in defrost mode. Some others
will just use the AC compressor, but not turn on the AC light. The
2001-2003 Prius is like the latter - if you turn the climate control
to one of the front windshield positions (defrost), the gasoline
engine will turn on to power the belt-driven AC pump, but the AC light
does not come on.

MRV

Ya, that sounds like every car we've ever owned.

Thanks.

Back in the 1970s, the NY commissioner of motor vehicles was Vincent
Toffany. I guess his speech patterns made him seem like sort of a meat head,
because a local radio station ran these silly public service commercials
which were apparently based on the station manager's observations of lousy
drivers, and how the commissioner would address them. "This is Vincent L.
Toffeecandy from the NYDMV. It's winter, ya know? Keep youse damn windows
clean, and for god's sake, watch where the hell you're goin'!"
