My p/s rack is shot and is leaking from the seals. I've been quoted
about $1500 to have it done at a local shop, but I'm wondering how
difficult a job this would be to do myself? Does anyone have much
experience with this?

Also, does anyone know who supplies the best remanufactured racks for
'88 240's? I'm not sure off hand if its cam or ZF, but I've seen that
FCP Groton has rebuilt racks done by Atlantic Enterprises that will
fit both types for a great price. Anyone have any experience with
these? The other ones I've found are rebuilt by Maval. I also have
access to an old one off of an '86 but I have a feeling it won't fit
my '88.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Keep getting estimates. We were quoted in that range as well, and
then we found an independent mechanic who replaced the rack with a
rebuilt unit for $600. He even flushed out the hoses, which were filled
with crud. Basically you want to make sure the pump and hoses are ok as
well, and the pump drive belt, to answer your later question.

until then, buy some quarts of ATF with the stop leak in it and use that
instead of power steering fluid.
It's cheaper than PSF and just might slow down (or stop) the leak (did
on my '83 245!)

Or do it yourself, it's not a huge task, I'd say it's about one step
above changing a water pump but several steps below a clutch or
transmission replacement.
