Default Stiff Transmission, Sore Neck

Would it be safe to say that as a general rule of thumb that Automatic
Volvo's shift slightly harsher that other makes of cars. IE: Tractor engine
attached to Tank Transmission?

Or do I just have a sour tranny.

Sincerely
Head strapped to Head-Rest

The automatic in my wife's 1991 740 is no worse than what comparable
cars from other manufacturers had back then.

You may notice a difference when comparing the performance of an older
to a newer car, as there have been advancements in technology and
performance (and price).

My 1987 740 shifts smoothly and softly.

I would have to agree with you, KLB. My 1993 940 is pretty bad when it
is shifting at high RPMs, if you don't push it too hard, though, after
10-15 minutes, it gets better at low RPMs.

Hey Robert

At first I was just wondering if Volvo's just naturally shifted a little
more harsh that other automatics. But since then I read up a little in the
Volvo FAQ's
(http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-90...missionService)
and there seems to be a possible symptom relief if one flushes the system,
changes the filter, cleans the pan and switches to synthetic ATF. But the
real culprit is a little (I think rubber) ball inside the transmission that
is 5.5 mm in diameter but wears down in size with use (quickly if harsh on
transmission). Apparently it is accessible without dropping transmission if
I understood correctly. I think myself I will go for the flush etc. if I
can find a shop that makes me feel secure and hope that things improve.

My harsh shift is even at low speeds but of course I am complaining about
up-shifting between first and second

Remember transmission oil changes should take place every 30,000 miles on
200/700/940 series cars. Could be that the ATF is getting rather tired.

All the best, Peter.
