Default volvo keys and key remotes

Has anyone figured out how to buy a new key and/or key remote (both
programmed) from any one besides a dealer for a newer Volvo (2001 S40
hope agains hope)? I have found vendors of the key remotes for $25 and
$69 but no one to program them. Some of the autolocksmiths say there
are a few auto locksmiths who have bought the equipment and can do it,
but no one in my area seems to have it. Does anyone have info about a
reputable locksmith. Thanks.

You bring up a common misconception about key & remote programming on
the newer models. In fact it is the car's computer that is "programmed",
not the key or remote itself. Each key and remote has an imbedded chip
that carries a unique serial number. The car is programmed, via the
dealer's VIDA/VADIS system to accept that key or remote as valid for
*your* car. So unless you can find a locksmith ( or independent Volvo
specialist service shop) who has purchased/licensed a VADIS system from
Volvo, this can only be done by a dealer.

This is also why you *never* want to lose *all* the keys to your car.
Even if you get a new remote, and new key cut to your key code, you
still can't start the car. Cars have had to be towed 100's of miles to
nearest dealer to program the car to accept a new key.
