Default ? about hub bearings

I recently had both hub bearings replaced for the first time on my 2000
Blazer. I've read many places this is very common. My question is, what is
it that makes them get so loud when they go bad?

The bearings chewing against the race, creating excessive clearance and
rough surfaces and metal fragments which rapidly escalate into a "wheel done
come off..." scenario.

If it's common then it's a piss poor design. I've never had any wheel
bearings go out on anything I've owned even at 180,000 miles or 43
years of service.

It's common only if you routinely off-road and submerge the hubs in
mud/water/crud without doing any service/repacking of the wheel bearings.

On the S Series the front wheel hubs are a problem. The factory ones
last for 50-70K usually. The problem then becomes one of people shopping
for replacements based on price rather than quality. The cheaper ones
last 20K if your lucky.

No way to service them, they are a sealed unit and it usually isn't lack
of grease that causes them to fail.

You are incorrect. And I have never off roaded with my Blazer or drive
where it is muddy. Read the next poster's comments. It is common on the
factory ones, and cheaper replacements. Cheap ones at my GM dealer cost
$308 with labor for each wheel hub assembly and only come with a year
warranty. The better quality run around $460 each but have a lifetime
warranty.
