V6 262 'W' motor 190k miles

The truck will heat to 195 upon first starting but when thermostat
opens, it drops immediately to 160. Currently has a brand new genuine
Delco stat installed which opened and closed correctly in a pan of hot
water before installation. Before that I installed a succession of
aftermarket stats, trying to fix this problem. I have also replaced
the two temperature sensors on the manifold, and had the temp guage
checked for accuracy. Finally, I am confirming the water temp
independently of the temp gauge by placing a thermometer in the
radiator. I've never seen anything like this in 40 years of working on
cars. Somebody PLEASE show me what simple thing I am missing.

thanks,
Phil

I had an engine in a newer truck that would heat to normal then shoot up to
max temp then go back down to normal temp. ..over and over every once in a
while. I thought it would be a thermostat problem. Took an hour to change to
out. Kept doing it. More examination revealed it was something stupid. Low
on coolant.

Maybe you have a 160 degree thermostat?

he said he tested it in a pan of water for correct operation, which I
assume, but could be wrong, included the temp for opening.

Is there water going to the heater, in the dashboard? Could you be blowing
all that heat energy into the passenger compartment?

What are you using to read the temperature?

cookie thermometer followed by my finger. Both confirm the temp guage
reading, more or less.

I think its normal. The engine antifreeze heats up to 195 then the
thermostat opens. The rest of the anti freeze is still ice cold. Then it
lets in cold antifreeze. The thermostat freaks out and closes and he has
160 antifreeze stuck in the engine. Its trying to regulate at 195 but
cant cause the antifreeze it too cold. Eveerytime the thermostat opens it
gets washed with ice cold antifereze and slams shut. Then hes at 160 again.
And the engine has to heat it some more to get it to open again. . Until all
the anti freeze circulates and gets above that temp. Then its capable of
being regulated to 195. I had an AMC used to drive me nuts doing that.
Until i quit watching the guage. After he drives a little it will stop of
course. Iv e seen it with too large of radiators too. But mostly winter
its noticed.
