Default synthetic vs regular oil.

My new Altima is up for its first oil change, and I was wondering if it would be more beneficial to go with more expensive synthetic, and how different would the performance be?
Thank you!

That's a great question! I certainly hope that you are enjoying your new Altima. I think that many car owners have asked themselves the very same question.

I've gone ahead and asked our Nissan Service Department Manager, Donna Burmeister (an AskPatty.com "Panel of Experts" Member), and here is what she had to say:

"There have been many advancements in the past 20 years in the quality of oil, especially with the additives and detergents that are mixed into both conventional oil and synthetic oil. Overall, the quality of today's motor oil is far superior to that of motor oil from years past. Synthetic oils are expensive and made to stand up to severe conditions that conventional oils usually cannot. In most cases synthetics offer reduced wear, reduced friction and cooler operating temperatures and they flow easier in a wide range of climates.

Nissan recommends that your Altima use a synthetic blend that gives you the best of both worlds. At Classic, we use the manufacturer recommended snythetic blend. This synthetic blend gives the outstanding lubrication qualities, protection and flow characteristics of a synthetic without the very high price. Remember, the Altima is Made to Drive and Built to Last, so follow the manufacturer recommended oil change intervals and use the factory recommended oil and you will enjoy the best of both worlds. The synthetic blend will give you the performance of a synthetic and lower cost of conventional oil."

I hope Donna was able to answer to your satisfaction!
