Default Chevy Suburban Transmission Question

I have a 99 Chevy Suburban 5.7 liter that seems to be running at a higher than normal RPM level. At 55mph, I'm clocking 17-1800. I also notice that while coasting to a stop, the RPM level stays up over 1000 until I throttle up some. Any idea what's going on?
