When you check your motor oil and find that the level is too low, it’s time to add a quart of oil. Make sure you buy oil that’s the same weight as the oil already in your car. If you’re not sure what weight oil you already have, you can usually find it written on the sticker your oil change facility places in your window.

When you’re ready to add the oil, you need to locate the oil fill reservoir. Usually, this will be a small cap with the oil symbol (an oil can with a drop nearby) on it. Start by unscrewing the oil cap and putting it somewhere you won’t lose it.

If you want to avoid spilling oil, you can use a funnel. If you don’t have one and some oil spills, however, it’s not dangerous. You will, however, notice some smoke or perhaps a smell once you start your engine.

After you’ve added oil, replace the cap. Make sure to check your oil again after you’ve driven for a while to make sure the level is right. Also, you should check it again in a few days to see if it’s dropped again. This can indicate a leak, and means you need to get your car serviced as soon as possible.
