Default Plowing Through with Mercedes-Benz’s 4Matic Transmission

Even though winter is coming to an end, the Mercedes-Benz 4Matic transmission is a great addition from the German automaker. This exclusive Mercedes-Benz transmission will still come in handy throughout the spring showers and other weather conditions that make roads less than ideal for driving.

Here are some interesting facts about the Mercedes-Benz 4Matic that might interest you.

• The 4Matic transmission is a four-wheel drive system with exclusive technology manufactured only by Mercedes-Benz.
• Almost every Mercedes vehicle equipped with this technology comes with a standard automatic seven-speed transmission.
• The name “4Matic” comes from the combination of “4-wheel drive” and “automatic transmission.”
• The 4Matic system was first available on four of the automaker’s C-Class models, including the C280, C350, C320 CDI Estate and the C320 CDI Salon. Currently, it is available on the E-Class, R-Class, C-Class, S-Class and Viano models, as well as all Mercedes-Benz SUVs.
• The 4Matic system is the most lightweight of its kind. It only weighs between 60 and 70 kilograms. As a result, drivers experience increased fuel efficiency even when using extra power to operate all four wheels.
• Fishtailing through the snow and wet roads is a thing of the past when all four wheels are engaged by the 4Matic transmission.
• This system monitors the vehicle’s movement at all times, including stopping. It constantly scans data from the car’s three-channel ABS as well as the steering wheel’s angle to decide when to act. The four-wheel drive disengages if ABS brakes are applied so that the driver has increased control and safety.
• The vehicle’s traction control is powered by an Electronic Traction System (ETS). The ETS uses extra valves for the ABS system, providing partial braking power to any wheel that loses traction. This is a simpler traction system, currently available in the M-Class SUV models.
• The original idea for the 4Matic has been around since the mid-1980s. It was first introduced at the IAA in 1985 in Frankfurt, Germany.
• The 4Matic was inspired by the technology used on the G-Wagon models. The new technology was better, though, because it used three open differentials – front, rear and center.
• The system allows each wheel to act independently while at the same time preventing each wheel from slipping. This gives the driver maximum control and traction even on the most slippery terrain.

The new 4Matic is available in the C-Class models and is planned for other current and future models. With this type of technology available exclusively on Mercedes-Benz vehicles, why wait to get behind the wheel? The engineers at Mercedes are always thinking of ways to improve upon existing technology to provide the most comfort and safety for you and your family.
